"Masha Bruskina"

.
Hodnett has used the original photograph of the execution of Masha Bruskina by the Nazis as a departure point for this painting.
(see also: Execution of women by Nazis....)
Unlike much of the artist's work, the paint is thinly applied and monochromatic and lends an almost poster-like quality to the painting.

This stark reminder of the atrocities of political intolerance is part of a suite of 4 paintings which were exhibited at the artist's well received solo showing of "Portraits of the Forgotten" at the Britannia Community Centre in Vancouver, Canada in May 2002. This suite of 4 paintings now forms part of the permanent collection at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. (see also: A Ukrainian Jew's Execution, Steve Biko and Stompie )
